Why do driveways sink and crack?

Sinking and cracking are typically caused by groundwork failure. If a driveway is laid on a shallow or uncompacted sub-base, it will move as the ground shifts.

Details: The surface material relies entirely on the sub-base for support. If the base moves, the surface material will fail. Structural repairs require addressing the underlying base rather than simply patching the surface layer.

How deep should a driveway be excavated?

A typical domestic driveway is excavated 150–200mm below the finished level. This accommodates a minimum 150mm compacted sub-base beneath the surface layers.

Details: Adequate excavation depth is required to create a solid structural raft. Skimming off too little material and laying over an existing weak surface can lead to failure. In regions with heavy clay soils, such as the West Midlands, deeper excavation may be necessary to ensure long-term stability.

What is MOT Type 1?

MOT Type 1 is a crushed, graded stone aggregate that locks together when compacted. It forms the structural load-bearing core of the driveway.

Details: The grading, from 40mm stones down to dust, allows the material to interlock during compaction and eliminate voids. Ungraded fill materials, such as standard brick rubble, retain voids which are prone to settlement.

What is the purpose of a geotextile membrane?

A geotextile membrane separates the sub-base from the underlying soil. It prevents stone from migrating downwards and soil from mixing upwards into the base.

Details: This separation maintains the structural integrity of the sub-base over time. It also provides a barrier against weed growth from the soil below. Its absence can lead to structural mixing and surface settlement.

Why is sub-base compaction necessary?

Compacting the sub-base prevents the stone from settling under the weight of vehicles. The material must be compacted in layers using appropriate machinery.

Details: Proper compaction eliminates air voids in the aggregate. Without it, the sub-base will naturally settle, leading to surface dips and wheel ruts. The sub-base must be fully compacted before the final wearing course is applied.

What are the drainage regulations for driveways?

Hard surfaces over 5m² in front gardens must either be constructed from permeable materials or direct water to a permeable area within the property boundary.

Details: These regulations are enforced by local authorities, including Wolverhampton and Walsall councils. Non-permeable surfaces require designated drainage solutions such as channel drains or soakaways to comply with planning rules.

Why do driveway edges fail?

Edges are subjected to vehicular load without lateral support. Edge restraints, such as concrete haunching or block borders, are required to prevent the surface from spreading.

Details: Edge restraints provide structural integrity to the perimeter of the driveway, retaining both the base and surface materials.

What is the lifespan of different surface materials?

Standard surface options can exceed 15–20 years when laid on a properly constructed sub-base. The structural lifespan is primarily determined by the groundwork.
